The western grey whale is teetering on the edge of extinction. There
are probably fewer than 130 remaining. Of
these 130, less than 26 are breeding females. Every year, they
come to feed off the coast of Sakhalin Island, Russia, but now a new oil
platform threatens the survival of this critically endangered whale.
WWF want
the banks behind the project, BNP Paribas, Credit Suisse and Standard Chartered,
which has two platforms in this area already, to demonstrate that they can be a
force for good and oppose plans for another oil platform.
WWF is organising a
sign up campaign to tell the banks to act to save the whales.
